Hey, Brocade concedes nothing, dude.<g>

If one looks at the Gartner/DataQuest report on Brocade's switch market segment projection for "integrated switches," one might conclude that the SW6400 was meant to be more than a stopgap product.

In addition, Dataquest ranked the market for integrated switches, such as the Brocade SilkWorm 6400 Integrated Fabric Switch, as the third fastest growing switching segment, estimated to reach nearly $1 billion by 2005.

brocade.com

Of course, the report doesn't speculate as to how much of that market Brocade presumes to capture. The same can be said for the newly minted "high availability core switching products" segment, for which they currently have no product.

Brocade might be conceding on one thing though. I understand that the second generation of the SW12000 is belatedly slated to include FICON so they can play with the Big Boys.

Gus, Coming our way next wk...............
While Interphase Corporation will be hosting the interoperability testing session, this is an official FCIA event and the testing will be organized and conducted by a multi-vendor, multi-disciplined integration team.

FCIA Fibre Channel Interoperability Tests
July 23 - 27, 2001

Purpose of the Testing

The purpose of the FCIA Interoperability Testing is to litmus test interoperability among various Fibre Channel vendors, identify product development issues which adversely affect multi-vendor interoperability, and to isolate interpretation or implementation issues related to Fibre Channel standards which may warrant additional discussion at ANSI meetings to insure multi-vendor interoperability.

The nature of the testing is such that any vendor is encouraged to test product regardless of the stage of development - production, beta or alpha.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eligibility

Any FCIA member company is eligible to participate in the interoperability testing. The cost of the event is $1,500 per company. All PO's and checks should be made payable to the FCIA. The FCIA will invoice each participating company once the event has concluded. The member company is responsible for travel, lodging and equipment shipping expenses. To participate, the member company must complete and return a confidentiality agreement and registration form.

If your company has never been to a Fibre Channel Interoperability test before, you will need to qualify your product before you can begin general testing. For further information on the qualifying tests, or to see if your company needs to participate in them, please contact Ed von Adelung at edv@infinityio.com.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Key Features of the Testing

Huge 30,000 square foot facility that provides plenty of room for testing
Fully staffed and supported lab environment
Product at any stage of development welcome: production, beta or alpha
Confidentiality for test results is assured
Convenient location - 15 minutes from DFW airport with lodging nearby

General Test Schedule

Event Summary:

Large Fabric Build
FC Tape (pending volunteers to contribute)
HBA-API
2 Gig
Ad Hoc FCIP
Ad Hoc FC-SW-2
SANmark Education
Class on Sunday
Class on Wednesday
Equipment available for members to run SANmark tests (Note: You MUST sign up for this with Ed von Adelung. This is provided for hands on SANmark education, and limited space is available!)
Event Description

Setup will be Saturday and Sunday, July 21 & 22. On Sunday the FCIA will provide SANmark Class Training and begin test activities. Monday thru Friday will be Interoperability Plugfest activities as described below. Please note that the Test Tracks and Ad Hoc Programs are focused on detailed interoperability exploration, to seek out and resolve device and product level issues within the industry. The SANmark Education activities are intended to provide FCIA members with detailed information to run SANmark tests within their corporate laboratories.

Test Track Details:

Large Fabric Build - Lead Bill Martin
Multi-vendor switch fabric
Edge Devices
Name Server
RSCN
Zoning
FC Tape - Lead Michael Hoard (pending volunteers to contribute)
HBA-API - Lead Ed von Adelung
2 Gig - Lead Bill Martin
ADHoc Program Details:

ADHoc - FC-IP - This effort will focus on exploration of standards development issues, around early product adoption.
ADHoc - SW-2 - This effort will focus on final proofing of all available product within the industry, and conclude resolution of issues among vendors.
ADHoc - iSCSI - This effort will focus on exploration of industry issues around distance and connectivity solutions including Fibre Channel and IP based trasport infrastructure.
SANmark Education

The SANmark class will show how to run tests on each of the available platforms, and give detailed training in what to look for in good and bad traces for each of the tests.

During the Plugfest week, equipment will be provided by Test Suite Providers, to facilitate FCIA member "hands on use" of equipment to run SANmark tests. This will allow FCIA members to become familiar with the SANmark test process, and allow the possibly to gather some amount of test trace data, which is necessary to file SANmark applications. A SANmark Help Desk will be available to answer questions on how to run the tests, and how participants may interpret test trace data. Since there will be limited equipment and limited number of people available to answer questions, there will not be personnel available to run SANmark tests for participants, or interpret test trace data. It will be up to the participants to run the tests for themselves, gather the data, and interpret results.

The following SANmark Conformance Documents (SCD) are anticipated to be operational on the following equipment.

SCD 2001 - both I-Tech and Finsar
SCD 2003 - I-Tech
SCD 3001 - both I-Tech and Finisar
SCD 3002 - both I-Tech and Finisar
