But this gross margin put out by Intel is an utter fantasy. They are predicting a gross margin of 47% for Q3 and 49% for the full year. This is very close to the gross margin for 2000.

Your numbers are wrong.

Intel's gross margin in 2000 was 62.5%

That's your opinion. And it's hard to find either evidence for or against it if you can't look into Intel's books. But I don't think it's possible to manipulate gross margins over an extended period of time. So far I'd rather take Intel's (or AMD's) word on financial data than speculate about something I have very limited data points on. As an investor I can mainly look on the market situation, future developments and the company's execution.
