I do not think so. Most people were not even allowed to vote, either due to race, gender, or lack of property, in the early republic. Woman and blacks could not own property in their own right, nor had they any standing in court. Children were practically treated as chattel, and had no recourse in abusive situations. Many states had vigorous censorship, and many required contributions to the support of an established church. I am sure there are many other ways in which we are freer today......
