It was recognized universally that no one had the "right" to another's private wealth. It was considered common knowledge that the government had no authority to tax a person's income, the fount of their livelihood.

And the consent was not so common even back then. When the government started making noises of levying a "whisky tax" many were ready to take up arms and cried out that the Revolution was being betrayed. If they could only see our government today.
