It used to be if a crime was committed on national forest land, the FBI came in and arrested the culprit with the help of the local district ranger.

We used ot have a contract with the county sheriff in another state where I worked. Now the Forest Service has its own police force, and it's not even answerable to the local managers. They pack heat, too.

If you counted up all the federal police, I think it would be pretty eye-opening. Maybe a whole lot of little police forces isn't as scary as one great big one.
