Wireless Growth Helps SBC Show Profit

Jul 25 8:04am ET

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - SBC Communications Inc. , the No. 2 U.S. local-telephone company, said on Wednesday its second-quarter profits, excluding one-time items, rose as growth in wireless and data services offset economic weakness.

Excluding one-time items, SBC's profits increased 8.9 percent to $2.1 billion, or 61 cents a share, up from $1.9 billion, or 56 cents a share, a year ago.

Wall Street analysts expected SBC's earnings to be in the range of 53 cents a share to 58 cents a share, with a mean forecast of 57 cents a share, according to research firm Thomson Financial/First Call.

Revenues, including revenues from its Cingular Wireless joint venture, grew 3 percent to $13.6 billion.
