Ahh, but we do have an aggressive plan. Dr. Zubrin is the architect. His plan made NASA revise its "Battlestar Galactica" Mars plan. We can do it, and do it for a fairly cheap buck. And keep going back.

Zubrin founded the Mars Society, which is putting money and action behind its words. In case you aren't familiar with the organization:

Their first project has been to build a Mars analog research station in the arctic. Info on the website. I discovered this organization in 1998, and was thrilled to discover there are others who are willing to do something about the lack of Mars action, instead of sitting on their derriers. There are several other organizations, but the MS is the first group I've found to actually be DOING something.

The benefits of the moon program are pretty well-known: miniaturization, GPS, laser, technologies of every sort. What do you think the benefits of a Mars shot would be, given that technology now has a critical mass of its own?
