With all that, though, if a man and woman wanted to go out into the wilderness and carve out a homestead, they were completely free to. No building permits. No building code -- if they wanted big windows, or small window, or no windows, they were free to have them. If they wanted to build with sticks, or stones, or mud, or sod, no limits. Nobody demanding how deep their outhouse hole had to be, or where it had to be located--they could use their common sense and knowledge to protect themselves or not as they chose. If they wanted venison for dinner, they got their gun -- no permit, no registration, no three day waiting period -- and went out and shot it -- no game wardens to tell them it was out of season, no bureaucrats to demand hunting or fishing licenses as a condition of eating. If they had a few extra potatoes to sell to a neighbor, just sell them. No food inspections, no sales tax collector, no income tax to pay. I If they wanted to hire a man to work on their farm, they just hired him. No Form I-9 to fill out, no OSHA regulations to comply with, no government demaning unemployment insurance, workmens compensation, no demands that they have handicapped access in their barns, if the man didn't work out, they fired him. Period. I wouldn't trade my flush toilets and electricity for life then, but I would sure like some of the freedoms they had.
