The foundry market is in for a shake- out within 12 to 18 months, but with all the suffering, it's anybody's guess which companies will be sacrificed.

Fab utilization is treacherously low, and recovery is not expected until well into next year, leaving many manufacturers weak and vulnerable, according to analysts at Dataquest Inc., San Jose. The analysts were in San Francisco last week addressing a crowd of nervous chip manufacturing equipment executives at SEMICON/West 2001....
