"I will win the crowd; I will show them something they've never seen before" That was Russel Crowe to Sir Oliver Reed in the Gladiator; That movie must have resonated with Gladiator Bill Clinton. "Win the crowd" was probably his motto during his reelection campaign appearances on MTV and his commitment to big business. Two millenia later, "Bread and Games" has merely been replaced with the Nasdaq and Pop Culture. The cool people are leading us (the populace) to believe that democracy (or if you prefer our smoke filled celluloid cliches) is a good thing for China. I don't know if it is or if it isn't but I do think that IT will eventually subvert China much more "effectively" than any carrot and stick policy. Hollywood, the internet, consumerism and 3G will eventually unite us all in a uniform blob but the real challenge will be for the individual to find some level of meaning in this world that defined itself as antimoralistic. Fanatacism may be nothing more than the extreme expression of a frustration with the gratuitous and gradual ucking of moral values. But others labor quietly and manage to find meaning and change not only our lives but perhaps those of our grand children as well. jsc.nasa.gov Six time shuttle astronaut Franklin Chang Diaz' latest project is to design a Variable Specific Impulse Rocket to enable a trip to Mars in a reasonable time frame. I wish our icons were made less out of the Gladiator mold and were more of a Chang Diaz kind. rf_hombre
