"During most of Mr. Clinton's years in the White House, major
Republican figures hammered away at him as if on a crusade, and news
media and commentators joined in, keeping the denunciations going even
after Mr. Clinton had left the White House.

In comparison, today's Congressional Democrats look remarkably relaxed. They are not traveling the country deploring Republican immorality, and Senate committees now headed by Democrats have not leaped to investigate the Florida voting or to try to rectify deficiencies in the nation's electoral system. Nor are many denunciations found in the press, which is otherwise occupied.

Casting a blind eye on the past is not new, least of all in America, where
optimism wins elections. "For 200 years we've lived in the future," Ronald
Reagan said in 1980. In the land of the smiley face, "Happy Days Are Here
Again" could be an anthem for any party. But when the country risks
forgetting deficiencies in the democratic process, there should be no statute
of limitations on remembering. "

Dear TP,

Since the Democrats sit quietly, like a row of round-fat cabbages that may never be plucked from the cabbage patch because they wilt whenever the gardener looks at them, our future may already be in jeopardy because
the Democrats won't fight back. They prefer the cabbage-patch lifestyle. It's an easier way to survive.

I wonder if a major Democratic player has written an Op-Ed article on The NYTimes results on the
Florida election. The Gitlin article suggests that a Democrat has not done so.

If a Democrat doesn't have the courage to voice an opinion on the problems with the Florida election,
perhaps we will NOT have a Democratic candidate who will be able to challenge Bush in the next Presidential election.

What happened to the leaders of the Democratic party? If they would spend more time at work
and less time screwing around with staff members and interns, maybe they could help pass some
decent legislation.

However, illicit affairs are not the exclusive property of the Democrats
. The Republicans also have a reputation for screwing around. Remember Newt? He married a staff member one not too long ago. Then there was Hyde. There are many others as well. I'd bet on it.

And there are even rumors about "W's past extra-martial affairs, although it is unlikely that they got in the way of his work as Governor of Texas since the pundits say he didn't spend much time working or thinking. And, from what I've been reading, the Governor of Texas isn't as powerful as the Lt. Governor of Texas!!!!
