Gaia: I ahven't looked at that in detail, seems there is a lot less excitement about it now than maybe there was. The idea of the "fragile Earth" seems to be to the fore - global warming, coral bleaching, bigger weather disasters etc. There is certainly plenty in the idea that the Earth system has plenty of equilibrating mechanisms. The "Greenpeace view" completely ignores this and sees the world as fragile. There are also disequilibrating tendencies. Some people ran a bit far with the Gaia notion in some mystical sense.

What were you thinking?
