I'd also considered the 'built-in' forms of redundancy and backup that some users (including myself) have been putting in place in earlier posts on this topic.

A cell phone, or an old dialup connection, might suffice for critical issues, but they may not be up to backing up the types of applications that CableModem or an xDSL supports. Not only from a raw speed standpoint, but from an authentication and other forms of provisioning standpoints, as well, if a VPN network is involved. Likewise, a throw-away email account is also useful, but if you can't call up your NOTES files that exist on the VPN-connected corporate mail account, it may be less than useful for continuing doing work from home. Of course, one can always dual provision for both dialup and cablemodem VPN access... and dsl, and GPRS, and ISDN... depending on the employer organization's tolerance to certify connectivity and implement security measures with each.
