Dan, Re: A tiny bit of marketing is all it would take...

Well, we all know what to think of AMD's marketing...

Plus: A rating would bring many problems. There are always benchmarks where it don't work (i.e. where P4 is faster) and the public don't want to be "cheated". Also the OEMs don't like ratings. They have to sell their systems under the new rating and have to explain customers what a "1.4 GHz / 1.7 GHz PR Athlon" is. It's all very confusing and in the end many customers would chose the Intel system because it has a "real" GHz rating. IMO this strategy would only benefit AMD if they clearly showed that a) their PR rating is accurate and b) that P4 is inferior to Athlon at a given clock-speed. I think it would be better to just show b) and price Athlon accordingly.

Dan, Re: a brand new FAB more advanced than any of Intel's FABs is a pretty significant difference.

Why is AMD's 0.18 micron copper process more advanced than Intel's 0.13 micron copper process?

And even if you could somehow argue that it is superior: Intel's new D1C fab in Hillsboro is completed since March and will go intro production in early 2002 with 300mm wafers.
