My official parental response is one of great ambivalence. She knows I'm disappointed in her and that IMO she did a very foolish thing (she has scrapes and bruises from falling) in getting drunk on the sly and out-of-doors in a strange neighborhood. Alcohol consumption has never been a hidden part of our lives. We're more like a European household than an American one in that we drink only wine, and mostly with meals. Our habit has been to allow her a sip or two on occasion if the wine is the subject of discussion. We don't see alcohol with same Puritan eyes that many contemporary Americans do, but still, I'm unhappy that she felt it necessary to deliberately get drunk, and to do it unsafely.

The conference you'll be attending is right up my alley. Did you see the article on Dorothy Lewis that I posted on the LWP a couple of days ago? It would be incredible if she were a speaker there. Do fill us in on what you learn.
