SOI is expected (hoped) to give AMD a substantial process advantage. If they have such an advantage, they can be more conservative in the morphology of the features etched, and the consistency with which the wafers are polished (e.g. bigger, cruder, features will be OK with SOI where they'd result in a die not testing good without SOI).

If AMD doesn't have to push their process, they'll likely get better yields. If Intel is cornered into pushing their plain .13 process, they stand a good chance of running into another notched gate disaster.
