They are selling very fast - do you know how notebooks are manufactured? They use somewhat specialized components, and usually runs of a given model are made, sold out, then a different model is produced. While some components are the same (disk, even motherboard or screen) it isn't as easy to maintain a long model run of a notebook.Try pricewatch. 19 entries for AMD Athlon plus Duron combined. About 150 for Pentium-III-850, more than 120 for P3-800 One result is hundreds of old models being offered as remainders by one liquidator or another on pricewatch - and there are no old remainder models of Athlon and Duron notebooks. The next batch of HP notebooks will probably have 1.13GHZ Athlon 4 chips in them - and will probably sell out just as fast. CompUSA is something of an Intel stronghold, but nevertheless:Presario 1215US Notebook AMD® Athlon™ 1GHz Processor, 128MB RAM, 20GB Hard Drive, 14.1-inch TFT Display, 6X DVD / 4X4X24 CD-RW Combo Drive Manufacturer: Compaq Mfg Part #: 470011-356 CompUSA SKU: 285193 CompUSA Price: $1,799.97* Usually Ships In: 24 Hours compusa.com Pavilion N5430 Notebook AMD® Duron™ 850MHz Processor, 128MB RAM, 20GB Hard Drive, 14.1-inch XGA TFT Display, 8X DVD Drive Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard Mfg Part #: F2418M#ABA CompUSA SKU: 284961 CompUSA Price: $1,399.97* Usually Ships In: 2 - 5 Days compusa.com VAIO FX210 Notebook AMD® Duron™ 800MHz Processor, 128MB RAM, 10GB Hard Drive, 14.1-inch XGA TFT LCD Display, 8X DVD Drive Manufacturer: Sony Mfg Part #: PCGFX210 CompUSA SKU: 284157 CompUSA Price: $1,499.97* Usually Ships In: 24 Hours compusa.com ; Put yourself in the shoes of the average shopper, which would you buy of the systems out in the stores this week?Brand Chip speed Monitor Disk Plus RAM Price Sony Duron 800 14.1 10 DVD 128 $999b MSN Toshiba Celeron 800 13.3 15 DVD 128 $1,199o Toshiba PIII 800 14.1 15 DVD 128 $1,399b MSN Toshiba PIII 800 14.1 15 DVD 128 $1,399c Toshiba PIII 800 15 20 DVD 128 $1,549c Compaq Athlon4 900 14.1 15 CDRW 128 $1,469c Compaq Athlon41000 14.1 20 DVD CDRW 128 $1,599b MSN Compaq PIII 850 14.1 20 DVD CDRW 192 $1,699c Sony PIII 800 15 20 DVD CDRW 128 $1,899c Compaq PIII 1000 15 10 DVD CDRW 128 $1,999b bto MSN Is it any wonder that the AMD systems are selling out?
