They use somewhat specialized components, and usually runs of a given model are made, sold out, then a different model is produced. While some components are the same (disk, even motherboard or screen) it isn't as easy to maintain a long model run of a notebook. Try pricewatch. 19 entries for AMD Athlon plus Duron combined. About 150 for Pentium-III-850, more than 120 for P3-800 One result is hundreds of old models being offered as remainders by one liquidator or another on pricewatch - and there are no old remainder models of Athlon and Duron notebooks. The next batch of HP notebooks will probably have 1.13GHZ Athlon 4 chips in them - and will probably sell out just as fast. And the the Intel systems are sitting on the shelves? The HP system you're referring to has a 15" TFT screen and was the most expensive AMD system available - and it sold out first.
