WMC nearing title pact on nickel lode

KALGOORLIE, Western Australian, July 23 (Reuters) - WMC Ltd said on Monday it expected to finalise an agreement with Aboriginal landholders by October over mining rights for its West Musgrave nickel prospect in the Western Australian outback.

WMC, the world's fourth largest nickel miner, has said it was looking to exploit larger base metals deposits to capture a larger share of the world metals markets.

Nickel is used almost exclusively in making stainless steel.

Development of one of the world's largest known nickel deposits, in Voisey's Bay, Labrador, has been stalled since the mid-1990s as Canada's Inco Ltd N.TO negotiates land access and employment with the local aboriginal population.
