"As I indicated in a previous post ECI = Existing Copper Infrastructure."

I see. That makes more sense given your earlier usage of the term (e.g., "the ECI"). The way you presented this factoid, however, in post 3403 did not leave a lasting impression with me, since you had already used the expression previously within the same paragraph without the clarification, and then never made the connection in the sentence when you used the fully spelled-out term:

"That has nothing to do with xE ECI which is cost effective across all users and against all technologies. Currently the PON isn't needed at mass demand level because the Existing Copper Infrastructure can serve the demand and growth in demand for the foreseeable future."

Incidentally, the kind of incrementalism that you are suggesting here is surely going to happen [is happening as we type] using copper pairs during the interim for a great percentage of share, probably in the form of DSL for the most part. Some native Ethernet over copper will eek in there too. I am not arguing that point. But as the backbone piece is pushed closer to the user (deeper fiber in the form of FTTC, or FTTCab), the growing likelihood is that some of that copper will be tied back to network units by PONS from the cabinet to the head end/central office. Others will not. There's no one size fits all solution here, neither now nor during the interim nor in the future.
