Have you read "Arrowsmith", a novel by Sinclair Lewis? There is a terrible section when the hero uses an epidemic in the Caribbean to perform a double blind test, as people are dying rapidly around him, and the island leaders beg him to give the medicine to all comers........

IN MEDICINE, studies require doubleblind controls

I think double blind tests are only required where there is potential for "placebo effect." I can't imagine that telling a lab rat about it's medication would have an effect on it's response.

In terms of this data being verifiable, I believe that some of the data could be reproduced through testing that doesn't harm the test subject and could support the data that could not be ethically verified.

Now whether any of the nazi data can be ethically used because of the total picture is a tough question.
