Aerospace engineers get picture with 3-D visualization system

Nikkei Weekly
Issued: July 23, 2001

The National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan has begun operating a huge three-dimensional visualization system developed in cooperation with SGI Japan Ltd. for use in the design and analysis of aircraft and rockets.

The screen is 1.5 meters tall and 4.67m wide, and displays images with a high resolution of 3.4 million pixels. Images are viewed in 3-D by wearing special glasses.

Operating the equipment in tandem with the new supercomputer numerical wind tunnel simulation system NAL plans to introduce next spring, aerospace engineers will be able to visualize such parameters as air flow inside engines and air resistance around a supersonic aircraft in flight. They will be able to alter the data and see how the changes affect performance.
