My idea is that there is an economy of intervention. For the most part, natural processes are not interrupted. Rather, pressure is put to order matters favorably. Since God is outside of time, it is as if He hears prayers and responds in the same instant, and therefore the response can be built in, even to events preceding the prayer, to nudge things the right way. Only occasionally, and for particularly serious reasons, is there a real miracle.

My maternal grandmother was supposed to have died of congestive heart failure several years before she in fact died. I was always praying that she would hang in there, because I had enough stress, and did not need another death in the family. Finally, one summer I prayed: "I know she is tired, and my life is in pretty good order. If it is time to take her, I accept it." A couple of months later she died.......
