Re: "Well, we are talking about replacing 100 million+ 0.18 micron processors a year. That's a lot of chipsets..."

Intel sells two chips/set with a large fraction of its CPUs - so figure Intel ships 120 million CPUs/year - and that 75% od these include chip sets - so that requires about 180 million ADDITIONAL CHIPS for the chip sets.

Re: ". Besides, XScale is SOI and that means more equipment."

Where did you come up with this fallacy/fantasy?

Re: "Uh huh. How many of these will be sold a quarter? 1k, maybe? On reflection, though, that just might soak up all the capacity... Isn't Merced still on 0.25 micron? "

Merced is built on the 0.18 micron process.

Oh -- better add a few 460 chip sets for those ITaniums as well !
