MOTHERS KILLING THEIR OWN CHILDREN: WHY?

I admit that I am a product of the 1950’s and 1960’s and may be considered a little old fashioned by some. But, the older I get the more I appreciate the values of that era. Children were more likely to be raised by two parents back then. Drugs were what you got at the drug store when you were sick. It was a disgrace for a young girl to become pregnant out of wedlock. And if someone was “gay” they were happy, not homosexual and “out of the closet”.

Mothers stayed home with their children more often than not and taught them the values of life. They seemed more likely to believe the Scriptures and teach them to their children. Scriptures such as Psalm 127:3 which says, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward,” seemed to have more meaning to mothers back then.

Now, we pick up the newspaper or see on television where mothers are killing their own children…..children who are given to us by God as “a heritage from the Lord”.

The nation was shocked a few years ago when it was learned that a woman in South Carolina drowned her toddlers by strapping them into their car seats and letting the car roll into a lake.
Three years later, a high school girl in New Jersey went to the prom, gave birth to a newborn in a bathroom, left the baby in a garbage can to die and then returned to the dance.

Last October, authorities in Kansas City, Mo., charged a 31-year-old mother with murder after two of her 8-year-old triplets were found to have been starved and scalded to death. And just last month a mother in Houston killed all five of her children by methodically drowning them in the bathtub.

We often think that these are the kinds of things that happen in other countries and other states, somewhere far away from Alabama. We want to believe that these are rare, unaccountable occasions when drugs or psychosis somehow overwhelm the God-given maternal instincts.

Unfortunately, that is not the case. These heinous crimes by mothers against their own flesh and blood are not only happening in Alabama, but in our own back yards as we learned from news reports last week.

In Jefferson County, a woman was charged with trying to murder her 8-month-old daughter in a hospital room. The 24-year-old mother was seen on hospital videotapes trying to suffocate her baby daughter. The mother had brought her child to the hospital claiming that she was having seizures. The doctors saw no evidence of seizures but were monitoring the child around the clock with a video camera when they saw the mother trying to kill her daughter.

Ironically, five years ago, this mother’s 8-month-old son died in a hospital after she reported that he was having seizures.

Tragically, at the end of last week we learned from news reports that a Chilton County woman had voluntarily turned herself in to police saying that she had molested two of her infant children. Photographs were reportedly found in the home showing the mother sexually molesting her two and three year old children.

You have to stop and wonder, what is happening to society and especially the mothers who commit these horrible acts against their children. I believe that the disregard for life by mothers has increased steadily as society – and the U.S. Supreme Court -- have given their stamp of approval for mothers to allow abortionists to take the lives of their unborn babies.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that mothers who are killing their children do so for many of the same reasons that would-be mothers are having abortions: selfishness and convenience. They want to do their own thing and having children interferes with their life. So, they take the life of a precious innocent child only to find out that their problems are only beginning.

Even though it will likely take a generation, I believe this trend can be reversed. However, I do not believe that it can or will be reversed until abortion is no longer allowed as a convenience to the would-be mother.

If a society says it is okay to take the life of a child from the mother’s womb, how can we expect society not to rationalize that they can do it after the baby is outside the mother’s womb? It is time for America to wake up to what we are allowing to happen to our own children.
