Well according to a fresh press release, AOL did purchase shares:

However, in the separate equity investment transaction, AOL said it bought $100 million of the Seattle-based retailer's stock at about $15.282 a share. The news comes as Amazon.com posted a small quarterly pro forma loss that beat Wall Street expectations but said revenue growth slowed.

We have to wait until the details are out. For all we know AOL's "equity stake" is $100 million of senior debt.

The $100 million was added to their cash account. That would not happen with the bonds. This was basically a private secondary offering of stock.
