Ponzi is a term relating to the original fraud by Mr. Ponzi. Old investors are paid returns, which they think are the result of gains on their investments, but in reality the source of the monies paid to them comes from new "investors" or depositors. Buying an overvalued security and hoping to sell it to someone else is called the "greater fool theory". This is not the same as a Ponzi scheme, S.S. has relied on taking enough funds from what was an increasing pool of new tax payers, to pay benefits to the older ones. Pyramid schemes are also a form of ponzi scam.
