Tony & Intel Investors - Intel's SERVER plans for the near future. xbitlabs.com Monday, July 23, 2001 Intel Server Plans [7:10 pm] Our sources provided us with a bit more info on Intel server and workstation plans for the near future. There are a couple of interesting things we would like to highlight. 2GHz Intel Xeon Socket603 CPUs based on Foster core and equipped with 256KB L2 cache are scheduled for August 26 together with the launching of 2GHz Pentium 4 CPU. 2GHz Intel Xeon positioned for mainstream workstation and performance DP servers will cost $615 at launch. The next CPU for the same market segment, which should become one of the main products here, will be Prestonia, which is planned to come out in Q1 2002. Prestonia will be a 0.13micron Xeon based on Pentium 4 architecture. It will also fit into Socket603, feature larger L2 cache and will support Jackson technology. The starting frequency of Prestonia processor will be the same as that of Northwood in Q1 and will make 2.2GHz. In Q2 2002 Intel will speed it up to 2.4GHz and in Q3 even higher. Prestonia is expected to work with either i860 chipset or DDR Plumas depending on the application field. Moreover, in Q1 2002 Intel will also launch a more powerful Prestonia modification for multi-processor servers, which will also feature 512KB/1MB L3 cache. However, these CPUs will work at a bit lower clock frequency, which will make only 1.6GHz at launch. Also Intel is going to keep developing Tualatin family for servers. In Q1 2002, besides the already existing Pentium III-S with 512KB L2 cache, there will appear one more CPU based on Tualatin core and equipped with 512KB L2 cache. It will work at 1.4GHz core clock frequency. Intel is planning to enter the thin server market with a low-voltage server Tualatin family. There will be new processors with 100MHz FSB, 512KB L2 cache and 1.1V Vcore. In Q4 already Intel will design Tualatin CPUs for uni-processor systems. Their working frequency will make 700MHz at that time. In Q1 2002 Intel will introduce the same CPUs for dual-processor configurations as well. In Q3 2002 Intel is planning to increase the frequency of low-voltage server Tualatin CPUs up to 750MHz. Itanium’s successor McKinley positioned as a High-End solution is expected to come in Q2-Q3 2002. However, pilot production is to start end this year already.
