Nicely detailing Paige's imprint

San Francisco Chronicle
Dwight Chapin
July 19, 2001

SATCHEL PAIGE came to my hometown once. It was a big deal.

I don't remember the exact year, or the team he was playing for (although undoubtedly it was one of those all-black touring teams that used to move around the burgs of America in the "offseason"). I don't recall what bunch of local yokels faced the great man that day.

But I do remember his feet.

For some reason, he was coming into that ballpark in Lewiston, Idaho, at the same time I was, through a dusty parking lot, and I never will forget the enormous imprint his feet left in the dirt as he moved in to begin his day's work.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Paige never walked. He shuffled, or slowly loped, so as not to overexcite his body or his senses.

That approach to life is nicely captured, among an assortment of other Paige-isms, in "Satchel Sez: the Wit, Wisdom and World of Leroy 'Satchel' Paige," a slim, entertaining new book put together by David Sterry and Arielle Eckstut of San Rafael (Three Rivers Press paperback, $9.95).

The price is right for this one, whether you know everything or nothing about Paige, the all-time great Negro Leagues pitcher who finally made the majors at an advanced age in 1948 and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971.

It's primarily a picture book, but it's also filled with Satch's quips and savvy observations on all manner of things, baseball-related and life-related.

The most famous of Paige's proclamations, of course, are his six rules on how to stay young:

1. Avoid fried meats, which angry up the blood.

2. If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts.

3. Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gently as you move.

4. Go very light on the vices, such as carrying on in society -- the social ramble ain't restful.

5. Avoid running at all times.

6. Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you.

There are many other bits of Paige's folk philosophy that offer more than a grain of truth while they amuse, such as this one on pitching: "Just take the ball and throw it where you want to. Home plate don't move."

Or this advice about lifestyles:

"Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching."

Then there are those feet, which Paige maintained were not as big as they looked.

Rumor has it that at some early point he was given the nickname "Satchelfoot" because his feet were so large he had to wear satchels for shoes.

"My feet ain't got nothin' to do with my nickname," he said, "but when folks get it in their heads that a feller's got big feet, soon the feet start looking big."

Sorry, Satchel, they were big. I saw your footprints in the dust."
