The new structure announced by QCOM appears to emphasize technology advances over marketing. We are seeing a transition from consumer products (e.g., the old handset division, now part of Kyocera) to the supplier of choice to handset and base station component manufacturers. Marketing need not be a big priority now that QUALCOMM has managed to get its foot in the door as a supplier of chips not only for CDMA systems but for GSM as well.

It seems that priority number one is to get CDMA/GSM compatible chips into the hands of manufacturers so that there will be a genuine alternative to the worldwide roaming capabilities now being advertised by Nextel, and the near worldwide roaming claimed by VoiceStream.
