NEW YORK (Reuters) - MusicNet, the music subscription service backed by some of the world's largest record labels, has added independent record label Zomba, home to the Backstreet Boys (news - web sites) and Britney Spears, to the service, RealNetworks Inc.'s (NasdaqNM:RNWK - news) Chief Executive Rob Glaser said on Tuesday.

Zomba also made an undisclosed cash investment in MusicNet and will become a minority shareholder in the service.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

The service, which has the backing of AOL Time Warner Inc. (NYSE:AOL - news), Bertelsmann AG (news - web sites) (BTGGga.D), EMI Group Plc (news - web sites) (EMI.L) and RealNetworks, is one of the industry's answers to song-swapping service Napster (news - web sites). Glaser has said the service is set to debut in the third quarter.

Napster is currently laboring under a court-imposed injunction after being successfully sued by the five largest record labels for copyright infringement, leaving its throngs of users looking for an alternative.

Glaser, speaking at Jupiter Media Metrix Plug.In music conference in New York, said Zomba would join AOL's Warner Music Group, BMG Entertainment and EMI as the service's label partners in licensing its digital music library to MusicNet. Analysts have said that these services will only be successful when they offer consumers the wealth of music available, underscoring the importance of striking deals with as many labels as possible.

``Today's announcement with Zomba furthers our commitment to offering digital music consumers the broadest music selection available from the world's most popular artists,'' said Glaser, who is also interim head of MusicNet. ``We are thrilled to offer music from both major and independent labels upon the launch of our platform.''

The service competes with Pressplay, a venture owned by Sony Corp (news - web sites).'s (6758.T) Sony Music Entertainment Inc. and Vivendi Universal's (EAUG.PA) (NYSE:V - news) Universal Music Group, which uses technology from MP3.com. (NasdaqNM:MPPP - news)

Pressplay will distribute its Internet-based music service on Microsoft Corp.'s (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) MSN Network and will offer songs in Microsoft's Windows media format, as well as use technology from MP3.com Inc., which Universal agreed to buy.

The move comes as Zomba considers moving its U.S. distribution deal to current partner BMG's rival EMI.

In March, Zomba told BMG it would not renew the Canadian portion of its distribution pact, giving it six months to find a new partner, according to company sources.

Zomba and BMG have declined comment, although sources said Zomba had been talking with EMI regarding a new Canadian distribution deal for its music.

Shares of RealNetworks rose a penny to $7.99.
