I can't say that I understand Cary's analogy between "MSFT being single largest engine making the US the greatest world economic power", and, "the earth is flat".

However the MSFT claim does seem somewhat outlandish. The company has existed for less than 25 years. Many other companies, innovations, institutions and factors have played a much greater role than any one company or any one sector.

Candidates, IMO, include:

Capitalism,
Property rights enforced by law,
Democracy,
The financial system and institutions,
...

He's saying everyone thinks MSFT is great now, but in 40 years they'll see what idiots we were for thinking that. And in 100 years, no one will argue the harm MSFT has done.

How's them viruses doing? What a breeding ground. Now's there's innovation for MSFT. Our economy is running on virus infected code. I'm sure it's everywhere.
