Qualcomm: Re-aligning its Business

--QAULCOMM is making changes this morning, re-aligning its businesses and holding onto its chipset business. We never believed QCOM was going to spin the business out and it was only necessary to spin it out while the negotiation on IPR with Nokia was ongoing. QUALCOMM did not want to cross-license their CDMA IPR for GSM IPR they did not have (and they needed GSM IPR to build chipsets for 3G WCDMA) because that would kill the licensing/royalty model going forward.

--COO Rich Sulpizio is leaving. He was to head up the chipset spin-off. Well-regarded CFO Thornley is becoming the COO.

Net: The moves this morning should have no real stock impact because there is no change to our thesis - we assumed once the Nokia deal was signed QCOM would hold onto the semiconductor business. We like this company much better with the chip business inside, not spun out. If the stock is down on the moves, we would be buyers.
