EASING EURO ZONE INFLATION SEEN HELPING ECB

Germany reported on Tuesday that pan-German inflation slowed to 2.7 percent year-on-year in July from 3.1 percent in June, below market consensus. ``The inflation numbers bring closer the day the ECB will cut rates,'' said Julius Baer's Strauss. ``But the jury is still out as to whether that will steady up the euro or cause it to sell off insofar as the ECB is so far behind the Fed in terms of rate cuts,'' he said.

Germany's key Ifo survey of business sentiment fell to a five-year low in June. News that French household spending surged 1.5 percent in June, reversing declines in the previous two months, also offered the euro some cheer, but this was countered by news Italian business confidence fell in the same month to its lowest since May 1998.
