Milan: Last year, I picked up a couple of Athlon Classics (not tbirds) from UBid, and built a system out of them. Around December, the $5 CPU fan + heatsink I had put on them started making this grating noise, so I went in and took it out. The system has been running 24x7 since then!

Probably what you got was a .18&#181 version of the Athlon Classic. They run fairly cool and you could probably do without the fan if you have a good heatsink on the lower-frequency ones (say around 700MHz, which I believe was the lowest .18&#181).
