Tinker,

But either BEAS is building gorilla power so that it can outsell superior technical solutions, or BEAS is the superior technical solution.

Actually, it doesn't matter to me if BEAS is the superior solution if it isn't the strongest Gorilla candidate. I'm sure you agree and I'm pointing that out only for the novice Gorilla Gamers following the discussion.

My question relatd to your comment about BEAS growing power: What is your response to Thomas's contention that it's far too early to draw any conclusions about the implications of current marketshare, especially if we assume he's right that almost all current adoption of the product is for development instead of deployment?

If BEAS is offering less functionality but still winning the marketshare wars then BEAS is obviously providing value superior to iPlanet and WebSphere that is coming from someplace beyond just the basic software product.

One must remember that all of this stuff is very, very new. J2EE has only been out as a semi-firm standard for a short while and even now still has some jello-like bits. iPlanet itself is very new and the bulk of its product line newer yet. Even for IBM and BEA, the product they are selling today is not the product they were selling a year ago in some very significant ways. This is why I am very reluctant to call anyone a victor ... another year and the mix may be very different.

And, again, it isn't as if I am predicting that iPlanet will necessarily be the one to come out on top. If I was convinced of that, I would make a case for it. Rather I am citing them, among others, to question some specific assertions which have been made. Think of it in terms of going into a car dealer and being told "we have the only XYZ" available today, but then finding that three or four other makers also had XYZ.
