But I wonder what their new baseline is going to be?

Talking about employees and baselines, after hearing Andy Bryant say that a new lower baseline has now been established, I was wondering if Intel will be reducing more employees. Here is the number of Intel employees

Q2 2001 88K
Q4 2000 86K
Q4 1999 70K
Q4 1998 64K

If a new lower baseline has now been established and normal growth patterns can be expected from here on, then it would appear that Intel needs to resize itself. I don't know whether the new lowered baseline levels are 1999 levels or even lower but regardless of the exact levels, it would seem that the current employee headcount is high for the new lower baseline based on historical levels.
