Mining causing dam cracks say environmentalists

Environment groups say a dam which controls 20 per cent of Sydney's water supplies is showing further signs of cracking because of underground mining by BHP.

The Colong Foundation for Wilderness and the Total Environment Centre says the Broughton's Pass Weir, north-west of Wollongong, now has four cracks and is leaking 430,000 litres a day.

The weir collects water from the Cataract, Cordeaux, Avon and Nepean Dams for distribution to Sydney.

The director of the Colong Foundation, Keith Muir says there is concern a major flood could cause the weir to fall, leaving many people without water supplies.

"It is too important, too critical - if it goes, then we don't have a water supply for the Campbelltown region, so they should never have cracked it," he said.

"Never ever should it have been cracked and the Department of Mineral Resources should have ensured that it didn't happen."
