"Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers have gone their separate ways in their choice of chipsets to support Intel’s Pentium 4 processors. Most first-tier companies like Asustek Computer, Gigabyte Technology and Micro-Star International (MSI) have chosen Intel chipsets for their main product lines, seemingly due to the lack of a clear resolution in VIA Technologies’s licensing problem with Intel....Intel’s PC133 SDRAM-based 845 chipsets have failed to earn approval in some retail markets, another reason driving small and medium-size board makers to embrace VIA chipsets. Sources from some of these companies also indicated that considering Intel’s DDR SDRAM-supporting Brookdale-D chipsets, which they believe will create better performance with Pentium 4 processors, will not hit the market until the first quarter of 2002, they decided to opt for VIA’s P4X266 chipsets first. Currently, more than three motherboard manufacturers that ship 100,000-150,000 boards per month have planned to fully support VIA products...."

john, re:P4X266

Then put your money where your mouth is.

Sorry, this chance is only a small window of opportunity, my investment in techs for now are quick opportunistic ones with money I can afford to lose a good 10% of in a day. I don't actually see anyone there as good long term holdings.

Coward that I am, my core holding had gravitated towards money market MF, a pork producer, banks and a gas company. Most are canadian. I'm willing to let the brave people lead the wave for the next bull run, bravery does deserve some reward. Meanwhile, I'll live with regular dividend yields no matter how long this winter lasts.

I believe there is still risk that any one company in the PC space will not be spared some further humiliation, and even the ones profiting from the explosion in demand from 802.11b is at best a temporary move up as these chipsets went from new to commodity pricing so quickly it was 'troubling'. How can companies recoup their R&D from such hyper compressed short product cycles in techs now?
