I still can't understand why some people think giving software away for free is a good business model

Who said anything about business model?

NVidia makes its money from hardware, not software business models. Why should they care?

Neil.

When I worked for YARC Systems, I produced a loader for a 68030 coprocessor boards for PC's. This coprocessor board was a functional equivalent of a coprocessor board produced by Definicon Systems, a company from which I had worked technical support and previously been fired, along with the rest of their support staff. Since Definicon was no longer providing technical support for their product, and their customers were comfortable with me, as an employee of YARC, I provided technical support for Definicon's product, beginning with sending them a free copy of my loader. This lead to the vast majority of Definicon's customers defecting to YARC, which bankrupted Definicon and successfully launched YARC. I think giving software away can be a great idea.
