I was under the impression that NatGas was preferred over coal due to the higher energy content per unit of carbon. At what point does the energy liberated by the h+o2 reaction exceed that of c+o2? In other words, how many hydrogen atoms need to be chained to make the carbon content a less significant player in the overall energy content?

Have you done any work comparing the energy content of coal vs vegetable oil? I was thinking of doing something along the lines of 1 qt vegetable oil has the same energy content as x cords of wood.
