To be fair, I don't think ole' Sam mentioned anything about gold in the original. The unlucky young lad was caught up in the great Nevada silver boom.

Anyway, that's my .02

For everyday purposes, though, one can generally use, "a hole in the ground, with [your choice here] on top".
