Intel says upbeat on Asian PC demand in H2

SINGAPORE, July 26 (Reuters) - Intel Corp, the world's number one chipmaker, said on Thursday it is optimistic about personal computer (PC) demand in the Asia Pacific region in the second half of 2001 and expects a seasonal uptick in the coming months.

``Demand for PCs has been shrinking in the U.S., and demand is getting hit in Europe, but we have not seen this for Asia and we are quite optimistic about the second half of this year,'' Christian Morales, Intel Vice President and Asia Pacific General Manager, told Reuters in an interview.

Morales said Intel had ``not seen any significant pushback in information technology (IT) spending'' in the Asian region so far.

``We've had strong demand for our microprocessors, chipsets and flash products in this region in the second quarter -- Asia Pacific represented 31 percent of our worldwide revenues versus 28 percent in first quarter, and 26 percent last year,'' he noted.

``We have not seen the U.S. slowdown reaching Asia yet...and we do not see any factors that would impact (this growth) in the coming quarters,'' Morales added.

California-based Intel reported net income, excluding acquisition-related costs, plunged 76 percent for the quarter ended June 30 to US$854 million, from $3.5 billion a year ago.

Its results were hit by a slowing U.S. economy, slack PC sales and a fierce price war.

Re: What 1.2 GHz mobile Athlon 4s?

What mobile tualatins?
What non RDRAM P4 chipsets?
What McKinley chip?
What new Intel FABs?

The mobile 1.2GHZ Athlon 4 is very clearly on AMD's roadmap for this year and is a minor change from the existing 1.0 parts. This same core packaged as the Athlon MP is available at 1.2GHZ and overclockers have had no trouble taking it to 1.6GHZ with a good fan (and much higher with exotic cooling methods).

The mobile 1.2GHZ Athlon 4 for Q4 is going to happen. Other parts (like McKinley or Northwood or Hammer) could be delayed or cancelled, but mobile Athlon 4 looks good.
