The die was cast in Vietnam long before LBJ - or for that matter JFK - entered the picture. There was a brief window of opportunity at the close of WW2, during which something might have been done, but nothing was. Looking at the larger picture, I can't really attribute that mess to partisan politics. It was inevitable that we would come up against the limits of American power; it happened to occur in Vietnam. If it hadn't happened there, it would have happened somewhere else.
