Big DDR clearout starts

Stocks being offloaded
By Mike Magee, 26/07/01 11:50:16 BST

A REPORT in Digitimes is suggesting that Via, Micron, Samsung and a clutch of mobo manufacturers are slashing prices to clear out stocks of DDR memory, chipsets and motherboards.

According to the wire, takeup of the boards has not been as high as some had hoped, and Via has struck deals with unnamed mobo manufacturers to bundle memory with their products.

Meanwhile, the same source rather puzzlingly reports that rather than move to the Via model, Taiwanese manufacturers are opting to support AMD DDR boards first, because La Intella won't be releasing its Brookdale-DDR chipset until Q1 of next year.

The jury has got to be out, still, on how well DDR is doing. Given the carnage that the PC industry has gone through over the last six months, any realistic assessment of the success or failure of the platform is both premature and problematic. µ
