Cutting expenses might make sense for AMD considering their decline in profits and possible loss next Q, but giving up on notebooks would be a bad idea. That would probably ensure losses. The benefits of AMD's attempts to move in to the low end server market are less certain. Server buyers are very conservative so if the attempt is costing AMD an arm and a leg it might not make sense but otherwise it does, esp since they have allready spent the R&D money for the Athlon MP, and the Hammer series is crucial to their desktop plans as well as the server plans.
