After years of lurking SI, mostly the OSX boards, I finally had reason to register to post. Thanks to who ever posted a link to this board. I’ve perused the past 1500 or so messages, but not seen my specific problem mentioned, so here goes:

1)New desktop computer, 1.2 GHz AMD, Win98SE (now Me), everything wonderful and fast too.
2)Installed Linksys PCI adapter and wireless card. Configured all. Surfing in style (wireless!!!), but…
3)The machine won’t shut down! When the Start/Shutdown/Shutdown sequence is initiated, I don’t get the “It is now safe to shut down your computer” message, followed by a shutdown. Instead, I get a black screen, then a reboot (with a scandisk, until I disabled “run Scandisk after a bad shutdown”). Pushing the power button on the box does shut it down.
4)The smart guys at the office told of the well known Win98 shutdown problems and referred me to the MS support site, where I launched several diagnostics without success. When I felt I was getting in over my head, I downloaded the patch for this specific problem, again without success.
5)The next step was to contact Linksys customer support, since the machine shutdown normally prior to installation of the card/adapter. Unlike several of the posters in past messages, I have found them to be very helpful, with only minimal on-hold time. They looked for IRQ conflicts, and suggested uninstalling and reinstalling the PCI adapter in a different slot, again no luck. They then advised removing the NIC that had been installed on the machine and was not in use. Still no luck.
6)As a last resort, I was advised to install WinMe as the OS, as it was made to cure Win9X bugs. Did, and same problem persists.
7)Two actions can be done to effect a “normal” shutdown (both are/were effective in either 98SE or Me) First, when I go to msconfig/advanced/VGA 640*480*16, the system shuts down fine. Of course, this gives the ugly color scheme, and is not a practical LT fix. I then searched for updated drivers for the video card Nvidia 64Mb TNT, without success. Second action is to go to Device Manager, select the Linksys wireless PCI card, and disable. Again, with EITHER of these actions, the system shuts down OK.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this? Will I damage anything by continuing to do a “hard” shutdown? I’m on the fringe of my comfort level piddling with these machines here, so try to keep it simple…

I will be checking in throughout the weekend in case anyone needs additional info.

Thanks,
dewey
