JDS Uniphase cuts jobs, sees no sign of turnaround
(UPDATE: Figures in U.S. dollars unless noted)

TORONTO, July 26 (Reuters) - JDS Uniphase Corp. (Toronto:JDU.TO - news) (NasdaqNM:JDSU - news) said on Thursday that sagging fourth-quarter sales would lead to further job cuts and charges and it saw no signs of current market conditions reversing.

JDS, the world's largest supplier of fiber-optic components, said losses in the fourth quarter ended June 30 rose to $477 million or 36 cents a share, compared with a profit of $137 million or 14 cents a share in the year earlier period. After all charges, it reported a net loss of $7.9 billion or $5.99 cents a share.

Revenues fell to $601 million from $641 million, in line with company guidance given in mid-June.

The company said its global realignment program will result in the elimination of 16,000 jobs, or which 9,000 were completed by the end of the current quarter. The cost of the realignment is now estimated at between $900 million to $950 million, up from earlier estimates of about $425 million.

JDS chopped its sales forecast to $600 million from a mid-June previous estimate of $700 million.
