This legacy compatibility included LIM to enable 8086 applications to access up to 8MB of memory using bank switching. What similar legacy feature do you see propelling x86-64 to the forefront?

The "power of virtual 86" & 286 modes was legacy compatibility. x86-64 offers the same legacy compatibility, plus you get 64-bit operations for the same cost as 32-bit.

That's GREAT... what OS/software will actually address them???

Seems to me that the x86-64 is going to take more software support and optimization than the P4... I honestly don't think the mass media software market is going to pick up on it...

Brushwud, <The "power of virtual 86" & 286 modes was legacy compatibility. x86-64 offers the same legacy compatibility, plus you get 64-bit operations for the same cost as 32-bit.>

Not exactly. Clawhammer has three modes of operation:

1) Legacy mode: Run 16/32-bit apps on a 16/32-bit OS
2) Long mode (Compatibility): Run 32-bit apps on a 64-bit OS
3) Long mode (64-bit): Run 64-bit apps on a 64-bit OS

Two of those modes (the Long modes) require a 64-bit OS. Without such an OS, you can't use the x86-64 extensions.

Also, Long mode only supports x86 protected mode. It does not support x86 real mode or virtual-8086 mode. Not that anyone would want to run old DOS or Windows 16-bit programs on a 64-bit OS anyway, but you get the idea. Even AMD has to make some minor sacrifices in order to transition to x86-64.
