Many people live from day to day, grab whatever pleasure they can, and don't do any long-term planning. If the future is wholly unknowable and uncontrollable, this life-strategy makes sense. Then, when bad things happen, (as they inevitably do), it's an "act of God", to be borne with resigned suffering.

But what is to be condemned, is that the banking industry and the government would encourage this.
