I don't have any recollection about that. They stopped praying in my school when I was in maybe the third grade. If I ever knew why, I don't remember. What I do remember is saying the Lord's Prayer with me saying "Amen" while the rest of the class went on with "And Thine is the kingdom..." That experience very much informed my current opposition to group prayers in schools. I imagine that the Church didn't much like the prayers, either, but I just don't remember any discussion on the subject.
